Summertime Blues-The Kids Are Home!

School is out for the simmer and the kids are home. For working mothers, the expense of day care begins. For stay-at-home mothers, the days of peace and quiet have come to an abrupt end. There are several ways that you can keep your children busy and also keep your own sanity. The key is to keep the children busy.

Most cities have various summer programs. There are recreational programs at local parks. These programs involve activities that provide will provide your child with some exercise and fresh air. For the only child, these camps can also provide him with the companionship of other children that he may otherwise be missing during the long summer months. Recreational camps also teach your child about different sports, which may cause him to become interested in a sports activity at school. For younger children, these programs are ideal due to the fact that they are usually held for just a few hours weekly.

There are also summer bible schools available at most churches. These programs combine religious studies with fun arts and crafts. Some of these camps are a week long for eight hours a day, while others may involve a weekend camping trip. This option can be a fun way for your child to enhance his religious education as well as giving him the opportunity to make some new friends.

There are also summer camps available that involve your child leaving home for a week or two to go camping with a group of other children. These programs allow your child to swim, go canoing, and participate in other activities that he may not have the opportunity to be exposed to at home. There are arts and crafts as well as lessons about different wildlife and nature. Although this is not appropriate for younger children, most school age children will enjoy themselves and may ask you to return the next summer.

As well as these other programs, your local library may also have some summer activities plan. There may be a program with a storyteller or some educational art projects to do. Most of these programs are once a week and continue through most of the summer. When you are at the library, you could encourage your child to check out a book to read to help to keep his reading skills sharp as well.

For every day activities, you could set up play dates with your child’s friends from school. Before school is finished for the summer you should exchange phone numbers with some of the parents of your child’s classmates. You and these parents can take turns watching the children for a day or an evening which will give you all a much needed break.

Also at the end of the school year, you can check with the school to see if there are any educational items that your child needs to work on during the summer. Some schools have suggested summer reading lists as well as flash cards and other activities. This school-related work will also help you to fill your child’s summer days.

Summer is meant to be a vacation for your child. By occupying his time with different fun-filled activities will make it more enjoyable for both you and him.

5 Great Tips For Making Your Dad Smile On Father’s Day

Father’s Day gifts are typically practical items - lawn care equipment, ties, golf balls, a new tennis racquet - stuff he can use.

Rarely do you get something sentimental for dad - it just doesn’t fit the day, and it usually doesn’t fit the dad.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. You can let dad maintain his stoic masculine front, but at the same time get him a gift that will simply melt his heart.

How? Create a photo gift for him online. Now, that doesn’t mean you plaster your picture all over a set of coffee cups, or a throw blanket, or a pillowcase. No, for dad you’re going to have to work a bit harder than that (and wouldn’t dad want you to work a bit harder anyway?).

Tip number one: find a photo sharing site that let’s you create gifts quickly and easily. Search the term “easy photo sharing” on your favorite Internet search engine. A couple will pop up near the top, but be sure to check them out before you start. Look for these qualities in the site you choose:

• Allows you to upload 300 photos all at once without downloading special software. Otherwise, you’ll waste a lot of time browsing your photos in one at a time.

• Gives you a nice variety of Keepsakes to choose from - but not too many. You don’t want to feel like you’re at a card store at the mall when you’re trying to create a gift online. If you do, it generally means they have membership requirements, and will try to “up sell” you every step of the way.

• Makes it really easy to do everything you need to do. After all, you want to create a nice gift in a reasonable amount of time. Look for a site will fill you album automatically. This will allow you to spend more time picking the right photos and less time creating the album.

Once you’ve found the right website, then start thinking about what kind of gift is appropriate for your dad.

Tip number two: One of the best is a photo album. You can create one very quickly using photos he’ll enjoy looking at - grandkids, some of his golf outings with buddies, a backyard project he’s proud of.

With dads, it’s often the time they spend in an activity with you that matters most to them. If he took you camping as a kid, and you dig up a bunch of photos from those days and put them in a photo album, you’re almost guaranteed to get him misty eyed. You might also want to pick photos that span a range of emotions - funny, sentimental, nostalgic. You know you’re dad best, so give this part of it some thought.

Tip number three: Another really good idea is a story book. This is a little more involved than a photo album as it means writing a story or two about the photos you select. The up side is that he’s more likely to pull the story book out and read it over and over again, reminiscing about the stories you’ve shared.

Tip number four: Calendars are always appreciated. Since it’s a custom calendar you can start it in any month and build it around any theme you want - fishing, tennis, backpacking, camping, motorcycles. Or you can give it a more sentimental theme. What grandpa doesn’t like to have pictures of his grandkids all around him, all year long?

Tip number five: you can create a nice set of greeting cards for him. Think about how much easier it would be for him to have cards on hand that he could use for a variety of occasions - birthdays, holidays, anniversaries. You can theme the cards however you want - the cards you come up with are really only limited by your imagination.

Whatever Keepsake you decide to create for your dad, he’s sure to appreciate it. And even if he’s the type who doesn’t show emotion, you can bet that he’ll be touched by your thoughtfulness.

And there’s no way a photo gift filled with pictures of his friends and family will get tucked away in the closet. You’ll sure to see your gift to him out on his coffee table all year long!

The Baby Of The Family

When adult siblings are asked how they feel about the youngest child, most will generally describe these “babies of the family” as being spoiled, lazy, and as “having the ability to get away with everything.” Parents describe these same children as being affectionate and sensitive. Both these descriptions are accurate. Many youngest children display all of these traits. Being a youngest child is not necessarily a bed of roses, however.

Parents take several different approaches when dealing with the youngest. Some look upon their last child as being their final chance to “get it right” and put undue pressure on these children to succeed. Others embrace their last chance at parenting and give in to every demand that the child makes to ensure that the child will never be unhappy. Neither one of these attitudes can help your child grow into a healthy adult.

The youngest child’s relationships with their siblings can be difficult as well. The older children can feel jealous and even threatened by the youngest child’s very existence and act out by making this youngster’s life as difficult as possible. They may use the child’s lack of experience to put him up to doing things that can be just plain stupid and in some cases even dangerous. The youngest child, in an effort to impress his elders, can usually be talked into to doing anything that they say. Youngest children also tend to idolize their older siblings, especially the oldest. The oldest child may take advantage of this idol-worship and push off their chores and other responsibilities onto the younger.

On the other hand, these youngest children often use their youth and helplessness to their advantage. These youngsters may try to refuse to do chores, stating that they are too young and little. These youngsters become born negotiators, learning to talk their way out of difficulties with their siblings. They may also be good at manipulating people, telling their parents things to purposely get the other children into trouble, using their age as an excuse that they “didn’t know any better” and setting one sibling against another. These actions can lead to the other children excluding them from certain activities and can make the youngest child feel alienated and separate from the family group.

Other youngest children refuse to recognize their helplessness and stand up for themselves with persistence and tenacity. They fight for their position and stand up their older siblings, leading them to become highly independent.

As a parent, these are several ways that you can ensure that your youngest child grows into a healthy, well-adjusted adult. If your child is using the excuse of being too little and helpless to do anything, you should make him do chores just like the other children. You should also check on his progress to make sure that he has not conned his older siblings into doing them for him. You should praise him for accomplishments in areas that he excels in instead of giving him attention just because he is cute and adorable. You can also include your youngest child in an activity in which he is in charge, such as planning a family outing or helping to pick out a meal. This will help to teach him to be a leader as well as a follower.

Many youngest children grow up to be affectionate and creative adults and often have a great sense of humor. Some famous youngest children are Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Jim Carrey, and Cameron Diaz. These examples prove that many youngest children grow into successful and independent adults with a little care and guidance from their parents. Remember that your baby needs to grow up one day, and anything that you can do to help along the way is beneficial to both you and him.

Contemporary Console Table – A Great Way To Open Up A Small Room

If you are working hard to create a contemporary d?cor feel in your home, you may be finding yourself running into the problem of square footage, and not having enough of it to do the job.

Generally, contemporary d?cor relies on large rooms with minimalist furniture to give an open space that harkens to a visit to a museum. However, if the floor plan of your home has less than cavernous space, you may be finding yourself having a tough time putting in modern furniture and creating the open area you had been hoping to have. A mirrored contemporary console table may be your answer.

As you are gathering the furniture you need for this space, don’t just think about how these pieces will fill the room. Think instead about what they can do to open it up. A mirrored contemporary console table will be able to do this in a number of ways.

First, let’s look at the appearance of a mirrored contemporary console table and how that can help. Just by it’s name, you can tell that it is going to be covered with mirrors. Those mirrors, once put in a completed room, are going to reflect light, making the room look brighter and more open. Thus, one can help to create the illusion of a more open floor plan when you are really struggling to save as many inches as possible.

Secondly, a mirrored contemporary console table does the basic jobs of a console table. That means inside it are drawers, shelves and other storage options. The more things you put inside your mirrored contemporary console table, the more space there is in the room. While many people think the only space that counts is the physical floor space taken up by larger pieces of furniture, any clutter in a room will also make it look much smaller than it is. Putting all those cluttering items in a mirrored contemporary console table will help to make the room seem more open.

Finally is the top of a mirrored contemporary console table. Not only is that reflective surface a great place to bounce light off, to brighten the room, but also it’s more space you can add to, vertically. By putting lamps, books or other items you need a space for on the top of the table, you may well have reclaimed a little floor space. Investing in a lamp to put on top of your mirrored contemporary console table instead of a floor lamp to put beside it has just saved you a little extra room.

A final touch is to situate your mirrored contemporary console table across from a large wall mirror. Really, this is a good idea beacause the effect of the two mirror sets working opposite of each other will not only create the vision of more space in the room, but also give you a very modern, artistic touch to complete this living space.

End Tables – Creative Uses For Them

It used to be that end tables were only known as small tables, which were placed at the end of a couch, sofa or even a bench. These tables were put here to hold minor decorations in living rooms. If things were going really well, they may be chosen to hold a lamp or two, making them a little more important in the living room space, but that was about as much as they could hope for in their life.

My, how times have changed.

These days, end tables have a number of roles to fill, and lives to take on. It is likely that someone saw all of them sitting in the store and thought, what if I let them try to do a little work in another area of my house?

From here, end tables started to see a little more opportunity. Some were moved into the bedroom. They were able to replace their distant cousin the nightstand. It was nothing personal against the nightstand, but many homeowners realized that their was a lot more variety in the style of end tables than in nightstands and they could create a more unique and personal bedroom space by trading out their old nightstand for a set of new end tables.

When you think about it, this was a natural progression. End tables are made with a variety of features. Whether you want a bookshelf to put a few magazines away at the end of the night, a couple of drawers for medications, glasses and other items you keep near the bed, or nearly any other feature that would be convenience, you will be able to find those features in them just as easily as you would nightstands.

Another place end tables have found a new home is bathrooms. While you may not think this would be a natural fit for them, you need to think about the various jobs that need to be accomplished in the bathroom. When one is soaking in a tub, there are often a lot of soaps, bath gels, loofah sponges and other items they will use to have a nice soak and be clean and refreshed at the end of it. They can be placed near the tub can hold all these items. Additionally, they can be found to match almost any vanity for the lady that needs a little extra space to spread out her make up and accessories as she prepares for the day.

When it comes to the modern role of end tables, there is no clear definition. Instead, they are only as limited as the imagination of the person who is planning to purchase and use them.

The next time you are thinking of adding a ‘little something’ to your house, don’t forget to consider end tables. If you have a little space that can use ’something more’, they may be the perfect fit to offer an attractive and functional addition to the space.

Author Jesse Akre is an owner of a wide variety of online specialty shops offering both products and information on how you can easily furnish and decorate your space.Today, he offers advice on creating a fabulous looking indoor space using awesome end tables, elegant coffee tables, and stunning accent tables.

A Student Government Election Made For TV - The Sequel

This day, May 6, 2008, I spot a front page headline in my local New Jersey paper, The Trenton Times that reads: Ewing H.S vote is void a second time. I had previously commented on my hometown high school’s senior class elections in a prior post, so I read on.

Seven students, one black and Hispanic, five black and one white, were barred from running in their senior class elections on April 23. The reason given was that the students had missed too many meetings for school activities and had not sufficiently participated in school fundraisers.

In my previous post on this election, I commented that such requirements were unreasonable for a student election; we do not require adults to show prior experience in politics to run for public office. I added that a school should have the right to deny students a right to vote if there are serious blots on their records: academic probation, repeat suspensions and criminal activity being examples. But neither faculty nor administrators in Ewing stated that any of the candidates who were denied the right to run was in any academic or behavioral difficulty.

I stepped back after writing that post and asked myself: was it possible that some of those students were in any difficulty, but the faculty and administrators said nothing, in order to protect the privacy of the students? It would have been inappropriate, not to mention embarrassing to the students’ families to mention academic or behavioral difficulties to the media.

However, if this had been the case, then a responsible teacher or principal would have sent a personal letter to the student and their parents. But, based on reading the Times coverage, I have to believe the students were good standing or that the school didn’t bother to inform them that they were not. All we have from the school system is a string of “no comments,” which is nothing to go on.

At the end of last week, with the support of their superintendent, Ewing High School’s principal and faculty advisors declared their senior class election a Mulligan. They called for a do-over; a new election where candidates who were denied an opportunity to run the first time were allowed to run for office, although they had little time to campaign. Those placed on the ballot for the first time might have achieved some recognition from the local news coverage that would have helped, but I do not know enough to say that students who could vote in this school election read the paper.

Then today’s Times reports that the do-over was botched; the vote was disallowed after the principal and the faculty advisors realized that approximately 60 students were not eligible to vote because they owed fines. I’d guess these were fines for overdue books, failure to return school property, or to pay for damages to school property. I can not imagine other reasons for a high school to fine students.

But if this was a serious concern, why didn’t the principal and faculty advisors stop these students from voting in the first election? If they were serious about assessing fines, they should have been equally serious about collecting them. It’s not an unusual practice for a school to hold your diploma until you pay back unpaid fines and parking tickets, though I’ve never heard of a case where students in arrears were denied a right to vote in a student government election. I must add that had no one protested the first election, the votes of voters with outstanding fines would have counted.

I apologize to you, readers, if you believe that I might be beating this story to death, but it’s too amusing to ignore. This is the first time, I’m aware of an election where people who owed fines were not eligible to vote. As adults we have the opportunity to vote in all sorts of elections: local, state and presidential, and we retain the right to vote if we owe back taxes, parking tickets, and of course, library fines.

Now there will be a third senior class election this week. I wonder if that should be put on hold a little longer to allow the principal and faculty advisors time to consider the meaning of free elections before they set the rules for a new contest.

Kitchen Design Guide: Getting Your Priorities Right

There are some universal topics that come up in the initial stages of designing a kitchen. They concern your personality and circumstances, the architecture of your house and your needs when preparing food. You need to ask yourself many questions so you can determine your priorities and anticipate future need.

The Space

• Is your kitchen properly sited in relation to other rooms in the house, and spacious enough for activities, appliances and storage required; or does it need extending or combining with other rooms?

• What is the size of your budget?

• Would you feel happier handing the entire project either partly or fully over to the professionals?

• How long will you live in your current home? Is a full – scale remodeling feasible for the value added to the property?

• Can you design a new kitchen without undermining the character of your home ? Have you considered the architectural features in the room?

The Activities

• Which activities will you do in your kitchen: food preparation and cooking; food storage; everyday eating; entertaining friends, family and business associates; catering professionally; laundry; homework from the office and school; watching television; childminding?

• Who uses the kitchen regularly ? Do you get in each other’s way?

Your Needs

• What are your challenges, priorities or preferences: a view from your kitchen; a sunny exposure and more light; food preparation with maximum efficiency; a clear division between cooking and dining areas; use of the kitchen as a family room; safety for children; direct access to outside areas;

• What are the good and bad features of your current kitchen and or other kitchens you have visits?

The Equipment

• Which kitchen appliances do you want: free-standing cooker; wall oven; separate hobs; a griddle; a barbecue grill; built-in or free-standing microwave oven; refrigerator; freezer; waste-disposal unit; dishwasher; trash computer?

• How much storage space will you require for: portable cooking appliances; electric equipment; bulk foods; fresh food and groceries; wine; cutlery and china; cleaning products and equipment?

• Witch other activities would you ideally like to have better space for: sewing; laundry; homework; home office; phone; sports equipment; recycling; preserving foods; toys and games?

• Which kitchen appliances do you want: free-standing cooker; wall oven; separate hobs; a griddle; a barbecue grill; built-in or free-standing microwave oven; refrigerator; freezer; waste-disposal unit; dishwasher; trash computer?

Safety

• Install cookers and hobs away from windows –draughts may blow out gas flames and curtains might catch fire.

• Choose a non-slip floor material and always mop up spills straight away.

• Many kitchens in older house have painted walls or cabinets that cross the line from period charm to decrepitude. If paint was applied to a surfaces in your kitchen before 1980, there is a 50 percent chance that it contain lead.

• Fire is a kitchen’s worst nightmare. Flank cooking areas with a non-combustible worktop material.

• Consider allocating space for a fire extinguisher or fire blanket.

• Never trail flexes across a sink or hob. Install electrical switches and power points well away from the water source.

How Safe Is Your Drinking Water… Really?

Many of us don’t stop and think about what is coming from the tap when we turn on our water faucets. We assume that the water is safe to drink and cannot harm us in any way. There are many factors that contribute to the safety of the water you drink such as from where the water originates.

Where Water Originates

The water that ends up in our taps comes from a variety of sources. The ocean of course is one of the largest sources followed by ice caps and glaciers. A smaller amount of water also comes from groundwater, lakes, rivers and streams and the atmosphere. The concern for drinking water comes from the worry of what is contained in that water.

Dangers Lurking in Drinking Water

Microbes are a big threat to the water you drink. They include viruses and bacteria that may come from parasites. Diseases can be communicated through drinking water as well such as infectious hepatitis, gastroenteritis and dysentery. The source for these microbes comes from storm run-off, animals such as wildlife, livestock and even pets. Septic systems can breed microbes as well as sewage treatment plants.

Pesticides are another concern for drinking water. There are many ways that chemical pesticides can infiltrate water systems such as rainfall, wind transfer, and urban waste. They can also seep into groundwater supplies and end up in rivers, lakes and streams. Some effects of pesticides in your drinking water can include headaches, diarrhea for short term and for long term effects may include certain cancers and fertility problems.

Other sources of contamination are PPCPs which are pharmaceutical and personal care products, inorganic products such as lead and copper, solvents and chemicals from industrial production and radionuceotides from both natural and human sources.

The Chlorination Process

When water passes through treatment facilities, chlorination is typically used to kill off any viruses or bacteria that may be present. It is not the perfect solution however as chlorine can interact with any organic compounds that may be present and can result in higher risks of bladder or colon cancer and it is thought to have some link with still births.

What Can We Do?

You might think you are safe when you drink bottled water but regulations surrounding bottled water are much more lax than in tap water from cities and towns. There are water filtration systems that can easily and cheaply be installed in your home to filter out some of the worst contaminating offenders.

You may be hesitant about drinking water for fear of all the risks that may be involved, but water is an essential for living and we cannot do without it. Water appears naturally in many of the foods we eat such as vegetables and fruits. To ensure the safety of your drinking water become an advocate of water safety. Get involved and keep yourself informed and when you have concerns, be sure you address them through the proper channels. We all have a right to safe drinking water and with consumer vigilance the problem can be readily addressed.

Unique Clothing Styles

When parents go shopping for children’s fashion wear they are often amazed by the unique clothing styles on every aisle in the clothing section. Some clothing styles are so unique that parents cannot tell how they are meant to be worn but the parents will be lulled into buying them because the children will reassure the parents that the unique clothing styles are in-style and considered hip to wear to school and any other occasion that they deem fit.

The fit of clothing has always been the most important factor that parents consider when they go shopping for children’s clothing. The unique clothing styles seem to have put that traditional shopping on the shelf where it will remain for many years. Unique clothing styles that are considered to be at the height of fashion these days have no fitting points on any body points unless parents have a very good imagination. The most unique clothing styles remain on the hips for no apparent reason but since they are in-style, many parents will continue to buy the clothing.

Some children will select unique clothing styles in the cut of the jeans they wear everyday. Parents are stumbling around the jeans aisles looking for brands that they used to wear, and are dismayed to see the provocative but unique styles that are in jeans these days. Many young women want to be unique while wearing jeans so they select jeans with waistlines that reach so low that some wonder where the zipper in them will be found. These unique styles are usually worn to show body jewelry off and the risque levels of the waistlines are showing everything off.

Parents continue to be amazed by the unique clothing styles found in the sleepwear section of a fine department store. The old standard sleepwear styles are often placed on one side of the sleepwear section so that another breed of nighttime clothing can garner every shopper’s attention. The newest sleepwear options being sold today lean more toward casual outwear and these unique clothing styles are widely accepted by friends when worn this way. Parents no longer have to worry about packing an overnight bag because the entire weekend wardrobe is being worn on their child’s back.

Undergarments are now the unique clothing styles that are worn as outer garments. Children are getting very comfortable with the clothing styles and some might forget what they have on is really not suitable for wear at church. Spaghetti straps used to be reserved strictly for formal wear attire, but these thin fashion accents are finding their way into the wardrobes of the smallest of children in the house. Some of the unique clothing styles in women’s shirts make it seem like a day at the beach instead of a day at the office where professional looks rule.

The undergarments for boys are now the unique clothing styles that professional boxers would wear in the ring. While shorter and truly unique clothing styles in boxers are available to those who want to wear them such as fathers who are desperately clinging to fashions of the past, the youngest men at home will want to wear these unique styles while playing basketball or walking along the beach with friends. Some of these unique styles will drop below the knees, which leads us to believe that men’s fashions inspired the Capri styled pants that women think are so unique to wear these days.
